But things are going swimmingly with our new fish kiosks in Somalia.

Somalia once had a rich and successful fishing industry, the center of which was the South-Central city of Kismayo. But conflict in Somalia effectively shut down the industry – with many fishing families fleeing Kismayo and the trade not being passed down from one generation to the next.

As Somalia rebuilds, we have been working to revive this vital industry and create new jobs for families returning – all through the supply chain. We’re really excited about a collaboration with the Somali Stability Fund and the Jubaland Ministry of Fishery and Marine Resources to deploy a fleet of mobile, solar powered fish kiosks around Kismayo!

The kiosk makes accessing fish easier for families throughout Kismayo.

With five of the kiosks up and running so far, this mobile fish market comes with a solar-powered refrigerator and a built-in cooker that can oven-bake or fry fish, which residents can purchase for lunch or a quick snack. Kiosks also deliver clean and fresh fish to the doorstep of Kismayo residents.

The goal is to increase demand for fish, create jobs for the youth who run them, and improve access to the nutritious benefits the fish provide. This idea has got us hooked! We can’t wait to see where these kiosks zoom off to next!
