Coming Together For George
At the core of our Alight values is the belief in the sacredness of each human being. We believe to be human is to be wondrous. And we believe that each of us comes into the world with a gift. And it is in the giving of that gift that we and our communities become whole. On Monday, the 25th of May George Floyd was killed by police, and we as a community lost a gift. And a family lost someone they loved. To George Floyd’s family, friends, and neighbors we offer our sadness and our grief. You suffer this loss and injustice deeply. We wish you strength, resilience, and hopefully one day a measure of peace. As an organization we live and work in places experiencing violence. Places shaken by war, disaster, and terrible conflict. We know something of what it is like to live with brutality. And we have learned the value of leaning on community. We rely on each other. We work with refugees, in fact many of us are refugees, and stand with each other every day. We do the doable, … [Read more...] about Coming Together For George
Stopping the Spread of Coronavirus in Southeast Asia
Teams coming together on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border... Our work in Thailand and Myanmar is defined by support to people on the move between the two countries. More than two million migrants travel back and forth between them regularly, looking for work and better ways to support their families. And thousands of refugees from Myanmar are still living in camps in Thailand, mostly along the border, although many have returned home and adjust to new lives there. Thailand is where Alight’s story began 40 years ago. Now, our work has evolved to support the new challenges people are facing in the region – and it’s still evolving as teams mobilize to confront the threat of COVID-19. … [Read more...] about Stopping the Spread of Coronavirus in Southeast Asia

#OurKitchenTable
In these unprecedented times, millions of us find ourselves working from our kitchen tables. We have been told to socially isolate to protect the most vulnerable in our communities. At #OURKITCHENTABLE we know that stopping the virus doesn’t take social isolation – it takes physical isolation. Social isolation is the last thing we want – in living memory there has never been a time where social contact has been more important. The COVID-19 pandemic poses problems that we cannot solve by ourselves, but when we band together around the kitchen table, we unleash our individual and community abundance to address the unprecedented global crisis we are now facing. COVID-19 has reignited community from behind our computer screens. We have banded together to organize lifesaving support to those no longer able to leave their homes, whether that be a trip to the grocery story, or a daily check-in with the most isolated. We are a global community united at our kitchen tables. Whilst we … [Read more...] about #OurKitchenTable

Living in a displaced persons camp is often the hardest on the youth. They're at the most social and energetic point in their lives. They want to be with friends, making connections, being active. They're thinking about what they want their lives to be. But sometimes it can be hard to think past the realities of the camp where they live. So, we were really thrilled to hear that the youth in Kalma Camp had an idea for a Youth Language Center. A place where multi-lingual camp residents could help their neighbors learn a new skill, and a place where Kalma young people could connect to the world outside. And we were happy to get them started. They had a space for youth that was pretty sad. It did have a shade to keep out the beating sun. But there were no chairs or mats. The blackboard had seen many better days. So, we helped them with some learning materials - a few books, notebooks, pencils, etc. And then we replaced their old blackboard with a newer model, and provided … [Read more...] about Parlez-Vous Francais?
