Women and Girls
Women and girls are at the heart of every humanitarian crisis. As persecution, conflict, violence, and climate change drive millions from the homes they know and love, Alight provides critical services to support them in rebuilding lives with dignity and security.
Displaced women embody resilience. Women are often the first to organize and seek ways to provide for their families. Research shows that women invest 90% of their income back into their families, compared with 35% for men. We support women and girls knowing that when they’re healthy, have livelihood and education opportunities, and are thriving, the community is better overall.

ALIGHT'S PROGRAMS:
In El Salvador, Alight’s protection program against gender-based violence creates informative spaces so people can recognize the violence that is sometimes accepted as normal behavior in their communities. The program also provides individual psychosocial support.
In Rwanda, we launched livelihood initiatives for teen mothers and vulnerable women, such as mushroom production, beekeeping, soap-making, hair-dressing salons, and other projects. These interventions have significantly improved the self-esteem of community members, giving them hope to pursue their lives and dreams again.
In South Sudan, Alight trained a group of women in Kajo Keji County on how to make liquid soap and introduced them to record keeping and best market practices. We also gave them start-up kits to begin their business in groups. The project was a success, and the benefits went beyond the earnings from the soap.
In Sudan, we established a hospital that provides comprehensive emergency obstetrical and neonatal care and other elective surgeries for refugees and the surrounding host community. 60% of all preventable maternal deaths globally take place during moments of conflict, displacement or disaster.
In Uganda, Alight started a greenhouse livelihoods project for women in Nakivale Settlement. The women manage four greenhouses that are learning centers where they gain cultivation and harvesting skills, and are able to sell the produce they grow in local markets and beyond.
